Construction workers only, hard hats required.
As you can see, the first day of construction was all about demolition and just about filled a dumpster!
This is not full of hazardous materials, these are the materials that had to be removed for the crew to reach the hazardous materials.
Here are some of the details from Rick High:
ReplyDeleteWork commenced on the FB project on July 1.
The first step in the process is to remove the hazardous materials from the building prior to demolition.
A number of building materials in the old FB contained asbestos. It was not dangerous to us as users of the FB, but when demolition begins the disruption of the asbestos containing materials could be hazardous to the construction workers. Asbestos is present in window caulking and glazing, the flooring, drywall compound, and the sub-roofing.
This remediation work will be done by Advanced Building Systems, Inc., a licensed remediation contractor. Their work will be supervised by CMGC Building Corp., the general contractor. Remediation is expected to take about 2 working weeks to complete.
The first step in their work was to remove non-hazardous building materials that were in the way of removing the hazardous materials. Yesterday they filled a large dumpster with doors, moldings, toilet partitions, etc.
Today (Thursday July 2) they will begin to set up their containments and safety systems so the hazardous materials removal can commence.
The non-hazardous building materials will be taken by E. L. Harvey (the waste management company) to its recycling center for construction and demolition materials where it will be sorted and recycled. This is in compliance with MA law and with the LEED program standards of the U.S. Green Building Council.
It should be clear to all that the FB is now a hazardous place to be. Please avoid the construction site at this time. The building should not be entered under any circumstances.
This blog is great! What a great way to keep us all informed, head off common questions, and provide a peek into the mysteries of demolition, clearing and construction.
