Work continues on footings and foundation walls

Monday, August 24, 2009

Work continues of footings and foundation walls this week, with the goal, weather permitting, of completing foundation walls by the end of the week.

Next week, foundation insulation will be put into place and the walls backfilled. Then excavation will begin in the slab area to establish proper grades in preparation for the sub-slab plumbing.

Your building committee continues to meet weekly on Thursday evenings with the architects and the contractors. The professional team meets regularly on Monday mornings at the job site.

Blasting complete; forms set; footings underway

Blasting was completed in the two required locations on Friday, and the week began by clearing the rubble. Forms were subsequently set for the footings. The necessary inspections have been conducted and the footings were poured on all but the front of the building. Footings will be complete by the end of the week. Foundations should be poured early next week.

The photos show the excavation for the footings and foundations and the footings in place. At several locations the ledge will serve as the footing. The rock will be drilled, rebar set and the foundation tied to the rock according to methods approved by the structural engineer and the building inspector.

Ledge!

August 12, 2009

Work continues this week on the septic system and on the foundation. The new leaching field has been inspected and filled with sand. Pipe will be laid this week and the septic tank installed.

Excavation for the foundation is stalled for the moment with some significant ledge in the way that cannot be handled by the large equipment. Blasting will be necessary in two locations, and a subcontractor has been engaged. Meanwhile, the foundation subcontractor will begin setting forms today on the worship hall wing of the building. We are still working toward pouring concrete next week.

Two photos show the ledge we have encountered. The other shows the excavation for the septic tank with the sand-filled leaching field in the background.

Excavation for the new septic system underway

Monday, August 3

The site for the new building is now fully-cleared of demolition debris and the exact location of the new building has been staked out by the surveyors. Unfortunately, but not surprisingly, there is ledge all along the front foundation wall and other spots as well. The site contractor will excavate for the footings and we will be able to see exactly what we are dealing with. In some instances we may be able to pin the new foundation to the rock. In other instances, it will likely need to be removed.

Whichever way we go, it will need to be resolved this week, as we plan to begin pouring the footings and foundations early next week!

The new septic system is under construction as well.
